Where the work is in Copperas Cove

Copperas Cove is about 10 miles west of Killeen on I-14/US 190, roughly 15 minutes away. Most of the city is in Coryell County, with smaller parts in Bell and Lampasas counties. It borders the southwest side of Fort Hood, and FM 116 runs north from town toward the post and on to Gatesville.

The largest project in town is the Department of Veterans Affairs multi-specialty outpatient clinic in The Narrows Business & Technology Park on Robert Griffin III Boulevard. KWTX and the Killeen Daily Herald reported the groundbreaking on October 8, 2026. The building is roughly 256,000 square feet and is targeted for completion in 2028.

The Copperas Cove Economic Development Corporation is building out other land too. In 2026 it bid a new road and utilities for a 45-acre industrial park off Old Copperas Cove Road, partly funded by a U.S. Economic Development Administration grant. The EDC is also marketing a 33.5-acre commercial tract at FM 116 and Lutheran Church Road on the north side of town.

Everyday lifts in a military town

Away from the big projects, Copperas Cove's crane requests follow its steady housing growth. Boom trucks set trusses and framing packages in new subdivisions. Contractors place HVAC equipment and signs on commercial buildings. Just outside the city limits, acreage lots bring requests for steel on metal shops and barns, conex containers and storage buildings, and large trees over houses after storms.

If the job is on acreage, describe the access road. Gravel and caliche drives are usually fine for a boom truck in dry weather, but a wet pasture or steep, rocky ground may call for a rough terrain crane or ground mats.

Airport height limits and city permits

The runway shared by Robert Gray Army Airfield and Killeen's commercial airport lies between Killeen and Copperas Cove. Under FAA rules (14 CFR Part 77), construction equipment near an airport, such as a tall crane boom, can require filing a notice with the FAA (Form 7460-1) ahead of time. If your job is on the east side of town, ask your provider whether your boom height triggers a filing.

For lifts that block a street or sidewalk inside city limits, check with the City of Copperas Cove about permits. Outside city limits, watch for narrow cattle guards, low tree canopies and soft shoulders on county roads and private drives. Those are common reasons a bigger crane can't get in.

Crane rental FAQ for Copperas Cove

General information to help you plan. Your crane provider has the final word on equipment, safety and pricing for your specific lift.

How long is the drive from Killeen to Copperas Cove?

About 10 miles west on I-14/US 190, around 15 minutes. Killeen-based providers routinely serve Cove, though rural jobs past the city limits can add travel time to the bill.

Do I need an FAA notice for a crane in Copperas Cove?

Possibly, if the job is near the airport and the boom will be tall. The FAA requires notice for some temporary construction equipment near airports under 14 CFR Part 77. Your crane provider can check your location and planned boom height with the FAA's online notice criteria tool.

Can a crane set box culverts and precast for site work?

Yes. Utility and road contractors often rent an operated crane or boom truck to set box culvert sections, inlets, manholes and lift-station parts. Give the provider the heaviest piece weight, how far it has to reach into the trench, and whether the ground near the excavation is stable.

What if my property has no paved access?

Mention it in the form. In dry weather many trucks can handle gravel or packed caliche. For muddy or uneven ground, a rough terrain crane or ground mats may be needed.
